The Way Interlocking and Subway Structure Rehabilitation project began in October of 2020. The work is occurring in the tunnels underneath the City of Camden and replaces an interlocking and performs structural improvements.
The interlocking was installed in 1980 and has deteriorated to the point where routine PATCO maintenance was no longer efficient. Repairs and replacement of interlocking components is necessary in order for PATCO to safely operate its passenger service. Each interlocking is comprised of an arrangement of switches, signals, turnouts, ties and electrical components.
The work to be completed consists of replacement of four turnouts, one crossing diamond, concrete and steel repairs, as well as lighting improvements in the Camden Subway. Work also includes the repairs to the subway floor slab, steel and concrete repairs within the Camden Subway.
This interlocking is located just east of Broadway station, hence the name Way Interlocking.
This project is scheduled to be completed in May of 2022.
